The BiHREC (Bosnia and Herzegovina Renewable Energy Community) project has officially kicked off with a successful consortium meeting. Funded by the EU initiative “Better Cohesion through Development of Energy Communities in the Western Balkans” (supported by Emilia Romagna Region and ART EN project), it aims to create BiH’s first local Renewable Energy Community (REC) in Zenica- Doboj Canton, starting in Visoko municipality.
Led by Sarajevo Economic Region Development Agency (SERDA), the partnership includes Association for Green Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Sources (AgH2RES) and Green Sustainable Solutions (GSS) as key contributors.
Core elements include:
– Installing a rooftop solar PV system (~100 kW) on a public building (Centre for Children and Adults with Special Needs)
– Establishing an inclusive, democratic REC legal entity
– Building a replicable model focused on social inclusion, energy cost reduction, and long-term sustainability
The project emphasizes social inclusion, energy cost reduction for local citizens and institutions, reduced emissions and long-term sustainability. It aims to create a replicable blueprint that can inspire similar energy communities across BiH and the Western Balkans.
GSS contributes European best-practice expertise to help shape the business model, governance structure, and overall strategic planning during this foundational phase – which includes establishment of the Bosnian first REC.
